Three Oaks Lutter Sands

 Project Description

The Three Oaks Road/Lutter Drive/Sands Road Intersection Improvements will install a new traffic signal to better facilitate vehicle movements through the intersection as well as adding a southbound left turn lane and northbound right turn lane. Sands Road will be reconstructed to reduce the vertical profile and a new multiuse path will be added along the south side of Three Oaks Road from the intersection east to connect to the existing path.

 

Current Project Update

  • April 24, 2026: The contractor has completed most of the remaining underground work on the south side of Three Oaks Road. They will begin working on the roadway pavement in the coming weeks.

  • March 26, 2026: Three Oaks Road is now in construction staging to work on the south side of Three Oaks Road. Work in the coming weeks will include storm sewer installation and pavement removals.

  • March 6, 2026: The contractor plans to remobilize the week of March 9th to begin work on the south side of Three Oaks Road to install curb, a shared use path, and the a new traffic signal at the intersection of Sands Road. Work is expected to run through early June. 

  • November 25, 2026: Paving along Sands Road and the north side of Three Oaks Road is now complete. Sands Road was re-opened to traffic in both directions. The project is now in winter staging. Work on the new traffic signal and the south side of Three Oaks Road will resume in the spring of 2026.
     
  • October 16, 2025:  Roadway base along Sands Road is now complete and curb will poured over the next week. Paving of Sands Road will follow the concrete work.

  • September 17, 2025: Roadway work has resumed with the utility conflicts now removed. The contractor will be installing storm sewer and water main along Sands Road while grading work takes place along Three Oaks Road.

  • August 28, 2025: The road contractor has been in delay due to a previously unknown utility conflict. ComEd has been on site the last few weeks to resolve the issue, and the road work is expected to resume within the next two weeks.

  • July 14, 2025: The Sands Road detour was installed on June 24th, and construction staging is now in place. The Sands Road detour is anticipated to be in place through November. The contractor has begun brush clearing and pavement removal along Sands Road, with underground work beginning next week.  

  • June 16, 2025: Road work is still being delayed by utility relocations. Road work is now anticipated to begin by mid-July.
     
  • April 21, 2025: Work on the roadway has been delayed while waiting for private utility relocations on the site. The contractor anticipates beginning work in mid-May.
     
  • March 27, 2025: The contractor anticipates beginning removals on site the week of April 14th. 

  • November 1, 2024: IDOT awarded the construction contract to Curran Contracting. It is anticipated that the project will start in the spring of 2025.

  • August 1, 2024: IDOT still has not officially awarded the project yet, and start date is unknown at this time. If work has not started by September, it is likely that the project will be pushed to the spring of 2025. 

  • April 1, 2024: Tree removal was completed for this project ahead of the construction this summer. The project will be on the 4/26 letting from IDOT to determine the contractor for the project. Work expected to start in summer of 2024.
