Current Project Update

  • April 12, 2023: Activation of the new traffic signal will take place on Tuesday April 18 in the morning. Changeable message signs have been placed advising motorists of the upcoming signal turn on.

  • November 3, 2022: Construction is complete until the traffic signal equipment arrives onsite in December.  After the traffic signal equipment is installed, minor striping and punch list items are all that remains.

  • October 13, 2022: The Contractor finished the asphalt surface on IL 176 last week, and pavement striping will be complete this week if the rain in the forecast does not affect the schedule.  ComEd will be performing utility relocations in preparation of the traffic signals that will be installed in the spring.

  • September 29, 2022: The Main St. final pavement markings were completed on September 23rd and the contractor continues working on sidewalk & curbs. Paving work (curb to curb) on IL 176 from Second St. to Park Blvd. will start this week and should be completed next week (weather permitting). Some traffic signal equipment will be installed in the coming weeks, but the signals will not be operational until spring/summer of 2023 due to lack of availability of some electronic components

  • September 22, 2022:  Additional concrete work was completed this week. The contractor is placing the asphalt widening on the north side of the road starting today. Final pavement markings will be installed on Main Street this week as well. Milling (grinding) of IL 176 will take place next week followed by placement of the final asphalt surface (weather dependent) starting late next week going into early next week. Motorists should avoid the area. Final landscaping and pavement markings will follow. Traffic signals will likely be installed in the spring.

  •  September 15, 2022:  The contractor is pouring the curb and gutter along the north side of IL 176. Once the concrete has cured, the asphalt widening will be placed. The project is anticipated to be completed by September 30.

  • September 8, 2022: The contractor continues to work on the north side of IL 176 excavating for the pavement widening and completing the storm sewer. Concrete foundations for the traffic signals have been poured. Next week crews should start framing the new curb and gutter on the north side. On Main Street, the landscape crews have graded the parkways and are installing sod. Except for the traffic signals, the project should be completed by September 30.

  • September 1, 2022: The contractor continues to work on the north side of IL 176 installing storm sewer. On Main Street, the landscape crews should start preparing the parkway for sod next week (weather permitting). Final pavement markings should be installed on Main Street in the next two weeks. Except for the traffic signals, the project should be completed by September 30.

  • August 27, 2022:  The final asphalt surface was placed on Main Street and the intersection approaches this week. Remaining work items for Main St. include pavement markings and parkway restoration. The contractor will continue working on the north side of IL 176 installing storm sewer and curb. The traffic signal subcontractor is installing underground electrical conduit and pole foundations. The project should be complete (except for traffic signal electrical equipment) by September 30.

  • August 11, 2022: Crews are completing concrete work along the south side of IL 176 this week (curb and sidewalk). Next week expect significant traffic delays on IL 176 and Main Street. Crews will start excavating for pavement widening and storm sewer on the north side of IL 176. Paving crews will start milling (grinding) and then paving Main Street from north of Crystal Lake Avenue to IL 176. Traffic on both roadways will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during the day. The project should be complete (except for traffic signal equipment) by September 30.

  • July 28, 2022:  Crews are completing the final water main connections this week and the lead service line contractor is making the connections from the new b-box valves into the homes. Curb work has started on the south side of IL 176. Storm sewer work continues. Crews have re-set the decorative light poles on Main Street and they are completing the brick paver work this week. Paving of disturbed areas and pavement widening on the south side of IL 176 should take place next week. While the strike did result in some delays, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the detour should be removed on August 6 (next Saturday). After the detour, traffic will still be reduced to one lane with flaggers during the day to accomplish the remainder of the intersection work (storm sewer and pavement widening on the north side of IL 176).

  • July 21, 2022: The majority of water main installation and water services are now complete along IL 176. The contractor is now preparing the south side of the road for new curb and pavement patching. The contractor will also continue to install new storm sewer along Il 176 between Second Street and Main Street. The week of July 25th, the City will have a second contractor on site to complete the lead service replacement for the applicable houses within the project limits.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 commenced a strike against three major material (stone) producers in northern Illinois. This has resulted in a shortage of materials (stone) for asphalt and concrete. This strike has delayed the final paving along Main Street, and the paving contractor will resume work as soon as the strike ends and materials become available.

  • June 30, 2022: Several crews and contractors are working on IL 176. The water main crew has completed the main-line portion of the new water main and is now working on the lateral crossings across IL 176. This work requires the periodic stopping of traffic with flagmen to construct these crossings. A separate storm sewer crew is also working on IL 176 near Main Street installing pipe and storm sewer structures for the project. Private contractors working for ComEd, AT&T and Nicor are also working on IL 176 relocating electric, phone/internet lines and gas mains that are in conflict with the road work.

Restoration and installation of brick paver work on Main Street is nearing completion. Topsoil has been placed on the parkways of residential lots. Staff is having discussions with the contractor regarding the installation of sod in the parkways based on the dry weather. This work may be postponed until late summer to ensure the sod takes.

Staff continues to monitor the detour and make any needed adjustments to signage or traffic signal timings.

  • June 23, 2022:  Staff continues to monitor the detour and make any adjustments as necessary to signage or traffic signal timings.

The Main Street portion of the project is nearing completion. The Main Street detour was removed on June 17. Parkways have been filled with topsoil and sod will be placed once the temperatures cool down. Brick work continues.  The milling and resurfacing of the pavement remains on hold due to the strike.

Work along Route 176 continues with the installation of water main. The work will continue despite the strike as the contractor has stone backfill stockpiled at their facility.

Nicor is also onsite completing their relocation work.

  • June 16, 2022: Staff continues to monitor the detour and make any adjustments as necessary to signage or traffic signal timings.

The Main Street portion of the project is nearing completion. The Main Street detour will be removed within the next week.  The final curb work was completed. Parkway restoration will commence this week with brick work hopefully starting next week. The milling and resurfacing of the pavement is on hold due to the strike.

Work along Route 176 continues with the installation of water main. The work will continue despite the strike as the contractor has stone backfill stockpiled at their facility. The contractor will have more workers onsite to install the water main due to some of their other projects being shut down due to the strike.

In addition to the road work, the lead service line contractor is complete along Main Street. The IL 176 service lines will be replaced in July after the new water main is installed.

  • June 9, 2022: The eastbound IL 176 detour went into effect on Monday.  Staff has been responding to resident concerns and with the contractor has adjusted signs and adjusting signal timings on US 14 and at Main Street/Crystal Lake Avenue to manage the displaced traffic. The Police Department is also assisting by monitoring traffic in the surrounding residential neighborhoods to discourage aggressive cut-through traffic. The contractor is moving in water main pipe and will start saw-cutting the IL 176 pavement ahead of the water main trenching work. The contractor has 60 calendar days to complete the water main work and remove the IL 176 detour. The entire project should be substantially complete by September 30.

The Main Street portion of the project is nearing completion. The final curb work will be completed this week. Remaining Main Street work includes sidewalk/ paver brick and parkway restoration and then milling and resurfacing of the pavement. Staff anticipates the Main Street work to be finished in two-three weeks.

In addition to the road work, the lead service line contractor is installing the new copper service lines on Main Street this week to comply with state regulations. In three days they have completed 15 of the 19 service lines on Main Street. The IL 176 service lines will be replaced in July after the new water main is installed.

  • May 26, 2022: Work on Main Street continues along the west side of the street and the downtown area. It is anticipated that the eastbound IL 176 detour will go into effect the week of June 6. Changeable message signs will be deployed providing advance notice to motorists of the upcoming detour. The lead service line contractor is anticipating to start on Main Street the week of June 6 as well. The IL 176 detour will be in effect for approximately 60 days. The IL 176 detour is necessary in order to construct the new water main.

  • May 19, 2022: The contractor placed the asphalt widening on the east side of Main Street and has shifted traffic to begin working on the west side. The northbound detour remains in effect. Staff is coordinating with the lead service line contractor. This work may begin next week. It is anticipated that the northbound Main Street detour will remain in effect into the first full week of June to allow the lead service line contractor room to work. It is anticipated that the eastbound IL 176 detour will also go into effect the week of June 6 or June 13 depending on weather. Changeable message signs will be deployed providing advance notice to motorists of the upcoming detour.

  • May 12, 2022: New curb was poured this week on the east side of Main Street, north of Prairie Street. The concrete needs to cure for several days before crews can start installing pavement between the curb and the previously excavated areas of the street. Crews are also forming up the new “bump out” at Prairie Street and modifying the existing bump outs to the south. These areas will be poured next.

  • May 9, 2022: Work is finishing up on the City-side of the water services. The roadway contractor (Pirtano) is also working on storm sewer and curb. The “bump outs” on Main Street between the Metra railroad tracks and Prairie Street are also being replaced. During the curb work, the parallel parking spaces on each side of the bump outs will be temporarily closed while the curb is being replaced.

  • April 14, 2022: Water main work along North Main Street has progressed to IL 176 with installation of the water pipe. The pipe is being pressure tested and chlorinated.  After testing, the water main crews will start installing the City side of the water services. Storm sewer work is also taking place.

  • April 7, 2022:  Water main work is underway with the Contractor starting at Prairie Street and working north. Storm sewer installation will also take place during the northbound detour. The northbound Main Street detour will be in effect until June 3, 2022. Motorists should avoid the area.

Project Description

This project will add a new traffic signal to the intersection of North Main Street and Route 176.  Also included in this improvement is the addition of a northbound left turn lane and eastbound right turn lane at the intersection. New pavement will be placed along North Main Street from Route 176 to Woodstock Street. Water main along Route 176 and North Main Street will also be upgraded. The City was granted $1.5 million in federal funding and $186,500 in State funding towards the improvement.

During construction northbound North Main Street between Gates Street and Route 176 will be re-routed for a few months. Southbound traffic on North Main Street will remain open. Once this work is complete, eastbound Route 176 between Second Street and Park Boulevard will be re-routed for approximately 2 months. Westbound traffic on Route 176 will remain open. Appropriate signage of the detour routes will be put in place. Changeable message boards will be in place alerting the traveling public of these closure dates.
