The City of Crystal Lake promotes safe practices while keeping our community beautiful. Follow these tips when cleaning up litter.
Do:
- Take adequate breaks and stay hydrated.
- Use the buddy system and work in groups of 2 or more to maximize safety.
- Provide adequate adult supervision for youth volunteers.
- Secure picked up trash properly to avoid overflow or spillage.
- Leave valuables like electronics and jewelry at home.
- Turn your cell phone on “ring” so if you lose it, you will be able to find it with a phone call.
- Wear sturdy, waterproof, closed-toe shoes that can get dirty.
- Wear bright colors, long pants, and long sleeves.
- Wear or bring sun protection like a hat or bandana, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
- Stay clear of any construction areas.
- Be alert for wildlife, stinging insects, and poisonous plants.
- If someone is injured, follow first aid practices. Call 911 if the injury is severe.
- Notify the Public Works Department at 815-356-3614 in case of heavy, hazardous or bulky items in public areas.
Don't:
- Do not conduct cleanups during extreme inclement weather.
- Do not interact with oncoming traffic/drivers.
- Do not clean litter in high traffic areas during peak traffic hours.
- Do not allow children to participate near major traffic areas or intersections.
- Do not pick up ANY potentially hazardous materials such as hypodermic needles, sharp objects, heavy objects, old car batteries, dead animals, or other unidentified or questionable item.
- Do not overdo it physically, take a break if you need one!
