Shoreline Fishing

If you are looking to fish, paddle solo or take the family out on the lake, the marina at Three Oaks has variety of row boats and other watercraft available to rent.  The marina also sells fishing licenses, night-crawlers ($4 per dozen), and miscellaneous fishing tackle products.

While we do not allow personal watercraft on the lake at Three Oaks Recreation Area, you can rent row boats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, paddle pontoons, and sailboats (see photos below).

WATERCRAFT RENTAL RULES

  • All rentals are available on a first-come-first-served basis as no reservations are accepted.
  • Three Oaks provides all required life jackets and seat cushions with rentals.
  • Three Oaks issued life vest/PFD must be worn at all times.
  • Customers must remain in the watercraft at all times - no swimming or wading from any boat.
  • Do not access the islands or shorelines - remain in the boat at all times.
  • Alcohol is not permitted.
  • Three Oaks is catch-and-release fishing facility only.

FISHING GUIDELINES

  • Catch & Release "ONLY"
  • Illinois Fishing License Required (Available in the Marina Building)
  • No "Live" Bait Allowed, defined as aquatic bait/minnows (Night crawlers available in Marina Building, $4/dozen)
  • Contrary to Illinois State Law, we do not allow taking of smaller fish (or any lake creature) and using them as bait for larger fish. Everything is catch & release.

    • Rental limited to 18 year old (minimum) and customer must show certification of passing a sailing course offered by a reputable organization.

  • Must show proof of knowing how to Sail
    • Sailing Card from Anywhere (expired is ok)
    • Log Book from Marina or Sailing Program
    • Old Goat's Club Membership (can show on smart phone if no card is available).

FISH POPULATIONS

  • The Illinois Department of Natural Resources performs an annual study to determine fish species and conditions of populations.
  • Muskellunge, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Bass, Rock Bass, Channel Catfish, Northern Pike, Walleye, and Pan Fish including Bluegill and Yellow Perch.

SHORELINE FISHING AVAILABLE DURING PARK HOURS - UNTIL FIRST ICE


South Lake

  • Larger 330-acre lake is popular all day.
  • Shoreline fishing is designated by signs marking where the trail ends.

East Trail

  • Starts at the southern end of the concrete sidewalk from of the Lakehouse to the Marina Building.
  • Meanders along the East shoreline for .50 miles.
  • Two rock platforms and shoreline.
  • Great for early morning bass along the rocky outcrops.

West Trail 

  • Starts at the northern end of the concrete sidewalk in front of the Lakehouse Building.
  • Meanders along the north shoreline for .75 miles.
  • Two fishing piers, two rock platforms and shoreline.

GENERAL RULES FOR SHORELINE FISHING

  • Dispose of any litter or trash in our garbage bins.
  • Share tips and ideas with your shoreline friends.
  • No alcohol or open fires along the trails.
  • Please bring refreshments, food and a lawn chair to spend the day.
  • Have fun and take pictures to share with us.
