Planning & Economic Development

The Planning & Economic Development Department oversees the economic development, planning and zoning aspects of the City's operations, advancement of the City's economic development through business recruitment and retention, coordination of development proposals through the City review process and research and response to external and internal customer inquiries.  Department staff provides research and assistance to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Economic Development Committee, City Council and other City departments.   

Our Services 
Planning and Economic Development staff is the go-to department for streamlining your development inquiries.  Before starting any project or making any changes to an existing site, please contact our department.  The Planning and Economic Development Department coordinates development reviews from all departments and facilitates the review process through the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.  There are many different developments or projects which would require a zoning submittal.  For example, the shifting of lot lines requires an administrative subdivision approval and an addition to your house may create an unavoidable encroachment into a setback which would require a variation request.  Our Department will review your submittal for compliance with City codes and look for ways to help you meet your project timeframes.  We want you to feel confident that your project can continue efficently to completion.

Our Department has created a Development Application page which provides all the necessary application forms and a brief explanation of the application and process.  Staff encourages everyone to look through the application and process explanation and contact us about your development project.

Comprehensive Plan Amendment
Staff is undertaking a Comprehensive Land Use Plan Amendment.  This will involve changes to the plan elements including Quality of Life, Land Use, Infrastructure and Unique Areas.  In addition, several new plan elements will be added including, Transportation, Economic Development, Housing and Environmental Resources.  Staff is creating a survey to solicit input from the general public.  The survey will be available here begining October of 2009.  Staff will post updates of the plan amendment process and progress here and on our Comprehensive Plan page.  We encourage you to become involved in this process.
