Department Summary

The Building Division is responsible for code enforcement and ensuring that buildings and other structures in the City are built safely and responsibly. As First Preventers, we work hard to prevent injury and reduce damage caused by fire or natural disasters.  The Building Division accomplishes this by reviewing building permit plans, applications, inspecting construction work, and providing technical assistance to residents and contractors. The Building Division also performs property maintenance inspections to help maintain the integrity and aesthetics of our neighborhoods.

The Building Code and City Ordinances are technical in nature, and sometimes difficult to interpret. The City of Crystal Lake Building Division has prepared informational packets for many common types of projects and procedures. The Building division will also be happy to answer any questions that you may have on the Building Code requirement or procedure.

The Building Division makes every attempt to process building permit applications as expeditiously as possible. Residential permit applications will be processed within 10 working days or less upon receipt of a complete submittal. Commercial and industrial permit reviews are given a time frame of 10-15 days to process the initial review upon receipt of a complete submittal.

The Building Division is available to help you with your project Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Swimming Pools

Safety is one of the Engineering & Building Department's highest priorities.  To help ensure that all necessary measures are taken to make pools as safe as possible, a permit is required for any swimming pool with walls taller than 2 feet.  This includes inflatable and other temporary pools that are commonly found at various retailers.  For further information on the permit process and general pool requirements, please contact the Building Division and also refer to the following brochure.
