The City of Crystal Lake has joined the Clean Air Counts Campaign and has appointed a committee to help the City achieve the goals of the campaign.

The Clean Air Counts Campaign is a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions, thereby improving air quality. Specifically, it is a multi-year initiative that seeks to achieve specific and significant reductions in targeted smog-forming pollutants and major reductions in energy consumption.

The goal of the Committee is to educate the residents of Crystal Lake on ways to use fewer pollutants, to work with business owners to sell environmentally friendly products, and to advise the City on how to reduce energy consumption. To meet these goals, the Committee has been discussing many ideas, including the following,

• energy-efficient lighting for city buildings
• environmentally friendly building code amendments
• gas can exchange programs
• natural landscaping campaigns
• low emission vehicle credits
• alternative transportation programs
• anti-idling campaigns

The Committee will also be participating in, and hosting numerous outreach events to demonstrate how everyone can implement these and other energy saving ideas.
