Cart Service
At no extra cost, MDC is providing you with two carts. The larger 95 gallon cart is to be used for your household garbage. The smaller 65 gallon cart (with the yellow lid) is to be used only for recyclables. The carts are the property of MDC, and must remain at your service address if you move or vacate the property. MDC will repair any damage or replace the cart if the damage is caused by our collection activities or normal wear and tear. However, if the carts are lost, stolen, or damaged due to your misuse, you will be invoiced for the amount of the replacement cart.

95 Gallon Cart for Household Refuse (All Brown)
Please use this cart for all of your "normal" household waste. Do not mix recyclables or yard waste in with your household waste. If you have too much household waste to fit into the 95 gallon cart, you may set out additional garbage cans (34 gallon size), garbage bags or 5 foot in length bundles for collection (no single item shall exceed 50 pounds in weight). There will be no charge for the collection of of this additional waste; however, it must be contained within the containers as outlined above. The following items are not considered "household waste" and are not eligible for collection: broken concrete, stone, sod, dirt, firewood, tires, hazardous waste, car batteries or large volumes of construction or demolition debris. Please contact MDC directly in advance to arrange the collection of any of these special items. Included in your monthly fee is the collection of one (1) "bulk item" per week. A bulk item is any item (excluding the above ineligible items) which is too large to fit into the 95 gallon cart or your garbage cans. Examples include, but are not limited to, sofas, chairs, tables, mattress, box springs, large appliances that do not contain CFC and HCFC refrigerant gas, PCB containing capacitors, mercury switches, or other hazardous components. If you wish to have multiple bulk items collected in a single week, please contact MDC in advance of your pickup date for pricing. White goods such as refrigerators, freezers, or other items that contain hazardous components are not considered bulk items. Collection of these items requires an additional fee and must be arranged in advance with MDC.

65 Gallon Cart for Recyclables (Brown with Yellow Lid)
Please use this cart for all of your recyclable materials. These materials should be clean, but they do not need to be separated - all of the following are eligible for recycling and may be co-mingled in the 65 gallon recycling container.

  • Newspaper
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Junk Mail
  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Tin, Aluminum & Bi-Chipboard
  • Catalogues
  • Metal Cans
  • Magazines
  • Plastic Coded 1-7*
  • Paper Milk and Juice Cartons
  • Telephone Books

*We cannot accept plastic bags, Styrofoam, 6 pack rings, oil container as well as some other items. If you have a question as to whether an item is acceptable, please contact MDC.

Yard Waste Collection (April 3, 2017 - December 8, 2017)
Included in your monthly service fee is seasonal collection of yard waste materials (grass clippings, weeds, twigs, etc.) Biodegradable brown paper bags are the preferred containers for yard waste; however, we will also collect yard waste from garbage cans that you supply that are clearly marked on the side (visible from 20') with a large "X" (use paint, duct tape or a similar durable material). Yard waste carts (95 gallon, similar to that provided for household waste) can be rented from MDC for a small monthly fee and eliminate the need to continually purchase the biodegradable bags.

Placement of Carts
On collection morning please place your carts no further than 3' away from the curb. It is preferable if your refuse cart and your recycle carts are placed on opposite sides of your driveway. If that is not possible, please maintain at least 3' distance between each cart. Please do not place the carts next to mailboxes or behind parked cars. Thank you!

Bulk Items
Any items set forth as refuse which are too large to fit into an approved container and which exceed, in total, 50 pounds in weight. Examples include sofas, large tables, and chairs, dressers, bookcases, mattresses, and box springs, other large household furniture, and large appliances that do not contain CFC and HCFC refrigerant gas, PCB containing capacitors, mercury switches, or other hazardous components.

Holidays
There will be no collection on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or whenever the disposal facility is closed. If your pick-up falls on or after these holidays, collection will be one (1) day later. If any of the above holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, your pickup day will be unaffected.

Customer Service
If you have any questions regarding your service, please contact MDC directly at (815) 568-7274. Our customer service representatives are available from 7am to 5pm Monday - Friday. Additional information, including various automated payment options, is available at our website (www.mdces.com).

Environmentally Responsible Disposal of "White Goods"
State and Federal EPA guidelines regulate the proper disposal methods for Freon-based appliances, commonly referred to as "White Goods". White goods includes freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners and de-humidifiers that contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's). When CFC's are released into the air, the earth's ozone layer is depleted. The ozone layer protects the earth from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. A depleted ozone layer causes increased cases of skin cancers and damage to food crops.

The City's contracted waste hauler offers a safe and environmentally friendly way for residents to dispose of these appliances. In order to make certain that these items are disposed of properly, the City recommends that residents perform the following:

  • Call MDC Environmental, formerly known as Marengo Disposal, to arrange collection 24 hours prior to your scheduled pickup day at 815-568-7274. Per the City's contract with MDC Environmental, the collection fee is $35.00 per item.
  • Empty the contents of the appliance prior to collection.
  • Place the appliance outside, as close as possible to the house, preferably in the driveway. Locate the appliance so that a vehicle can access it.
  • Do not place appliances next to the street or in the sidewalk. If left next to the street, collectors who do not dispose of Freon properly can collect the appliance.
