The Targeted Response Unit’s (TRU) primary focus is demonstrating a pro-active, problem solving initiative, consistent with the Department’s community oriented policing philosophy. TRU is directly responsive to "quality of life" complaints in neighborhoods, utilizing various enforcement, education, or conflict mediation methods to produce an effective resolution.
TRU consists of officers assigned to traffic operations, special operations, and two personnel temporarily assigned to narcotic investigative agencies. These officers have received specialized training beyond their regular patrol functions. For example, these officers receive extensive training through Northwestern University's traffic crash investigation courses which provides great insight regarding vehicle dynamics and enhanced crash investigation techniques and processes.
TRU is also responsible for monitoring all registered sex offenders, parolees and gang members residing within the community. Additionally, TRU provides arrest warrant service, conducts narcotic related investigations, provides support to the Criminal Investigation/Patrol Units, and handles overweight/over-dimension truck enforcement. The TRU Sergeant works in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies to further achieve set goals.
Report suspected criminal activity immediately by dialing 9-1-1. If you wish to consult with a street crimes specialist or speak with the TRU Unit’s supervisor, contact Sergeant Bennett at 815-356-3789, or by email.
