Area 2 is a neighborhood north of the lake and commonly referred to as the North Shore. Area 2 experiences issues with standing water and limited access on certain roadways during severe rain events. The main causes of flooding in Area 2 are due to:
- Lack of adequate minor drainage system to convey routine flows,
- High groundwater related to high Lake levels thus restricting infiltration, and
- Lack of major drainage route.
The option, as presented in the Flooding Study, to reduce flooding in this area was to replace the existing drainage network along Greenfield Road and East End Avenue. Additional information regarding the presented option is available here.
The following outlines the project history:
2012 - The project was put on hold due to resident concerns.
Winter 2011: Evaluation of Additional Alternatives
The City's consultant for the project is currently evaluating some additional alternatives for review by the City.
October 12, 2010: City Hosts Meeting to Update Public on Project Status
The City hosted a third public meeting to provide residents with an update on the progress for the flood mitigation in both Area 1B and Area 2. A presentation outlining the next steps in the evaluation process as well as additional background on the causes of the flooding issues was given. Residents were able to participate in a question and answer session. Project slides are now available in the Public Presentations section of the Engineering Division webpage.
Summer 2010: City and Crystal Lake Park District Re-evaluate Options
Due to a number of comments by residents at the June 8, 2010 meeting that did not support the presented option, and concerns that the perceived cause of the flooding (development of Lippold Park to the north) is not being fully addressed, City Staff will be analyzing other options with its consultant as well as the Crystal Lake Park District. Results of this analysis will be presented at a future public information meeting on October 12, 2010.
June 8, 2010: City Presents First Design Option at Public Meeting
On June 8, 2010, the City and its consultant, Gewalt Hamilton Associates, presented the first design option to mitigate the flooding issues for Area 2 of the Flooding Study. This option included adjustments to the existing roadway network and a bioswale that would provide an overland route for stormwater that exceeded the capacity of the existing storm sewer network.
