Proposed Building
Code Updates

The City of Crystal Lake is committed to the high quality of life enjoyed by the citizens and businesses of Crystal Lake. In an effort to provide high quality service, the City has been reviewing the building codes to determine if changes are in order.

The City of Crystal Lake last had a significant update in its building codes in 2002, when it adopted the 2000 International Code Council model codes. The City has been reviewing various updates that have been published by the ICC and other agencies since that time, and is proposing an update to all building codes. Below is a table that shows the current model code version that the City is using, and the version or code that will either update or replace the code:

The updated codes represent the most current advances in life safety building codes, and add clarity to the City's existing codes. The updated model codes include many of the amendments that the City has adopted in the past. The City is also taking the opportunity to repeal amendments that are outdated and ineffective, and should not be perpetuated. Any development or permit application that was formally submitted to the City prior to the date of adopting the new codes will be subject to enforcement under the previous version of the code.

The Building Division and Fire Prevention Bureau Staff conducted workshops on March 18 and March 31 with area contractors, architects, builders and developers. These meetings were very well attended, and the building community gave the City some valuable feedback. This feedback was then evaluated, and the City adjusted the codes where there was good reason to do so. In addition, the City also presented the codes to the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, and they were supportive of the change. Finally, the Fire Prevention Bureau held a workshop to specifically address the tent and canopy section of the proposed code on April 21 for groups that hold fairs and other events.

The City is now conducting a public comment period for any feedback from the community about these proposed changes. Below are summaries of the different changes and amendments that these codes will introduce. Please submit any comments to the City before June 6, 2008. Once the comment period has ended, the public comments will be considered, and the proposed codes and amendments will be submitted to the City Council for approval.

Please submit comments about the Fire Code to:
